Borris Lacemakers - latest news!

The silly season of summer may well be with us but it is no holiday for the hardworking Borris Lacemakers.

A very successful Borris Lace Class took place on Saturday June 7th with learners travelling from near and far to the Town Hall Borris to learn this beautiful craft. This class took place thanks to the ‘Reach’ programme under KCETB. Further classes take place under this programme on Saturday July 12th also in Borris Town Hall and on September 6th in nearby Drumphea Community Centre.  The former is completely booked out but there are still places available for Sept. 6th - contact borrislacemakers@gmail.com or phone Helena at 0871269014 or Brigid on 0876450722 for further details.

Visitors to the Borris Lacemaker’s stand at the Rathanna Village Day on June 22nd were very impressed at the array of beautiful pieces that were on display. Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor was one of those who admired the collars, blouse and other specimens and even tried on a hat adorned with unique Borris Lace.

August is ‘Craft Month’ and is really busy with an appropriately titled exhibition namely ‘A Stitch in Time’ at Inistioge Vintage Fair on August 3rd,  a trip to Limerick for members on the 6th to view ‘Limerick Lace’ and the most exciting event of all ‘Lace on the Village Green’ in Borris on August 22nd.  Don’t be surprised to find ladies dressed in period costume making and displaying the lace that once provided cottiers with an income that far surpassed what could be earned with hard labour in the fields.

Meanwhile sessions continue on Wednesday mornings in the room beside Borris Library from 10 – 12.30 and recent visitors who tried a few stitches were from Germany and the United States.
