Carlow County Councils Biodiversity Officer, Shane Casey, invites you/your group to take part in the Blackstairs Heritage Keepers (HK) Programme in Myshall NS and Community Hall, delivered by the Burrenbeo Trust.
The programme will be carried out over one weekend (Saturday 31st August, 10am-4pm, and Sunday 1st Sept, 10am-4pm), with lunch provided on both days.
Heritage Keepers is a free programme for communities that will enable them to work together as a group to explore the built, natural, and cultural heritage of their local place, and then plan a funded action to enhance their place. The ultimate goal of Heritage Keepers is Community stewardship or Community-led conservation.
Workshop Outline:
Introduction and 'My Place' – this workshop will introduce participants to the HK approach and will begin to consider the layers of 'Our Place', what you like or dislike about 'Your Place' and the local assets which exist.
Culture and the past – using a variety of online resources they will investigate what life was like in Our Place in the past. A time to learn about the legacy left by our ancestors; the stories and folklore, monuments and buildings.
Biodiversity and land use – the natural heritage which surrounds us all is the topic of module three. They will look to identify the changes in land use and our local environments and think about what we can do to protect biodiversity locally.
The Future – Having considered our places as they currently are, they will look to the future and how we would like it to be. Initial ideas for potential actions are discussed and a framework for moving them forward will be shared.
Planning for action – How to finalise local action plans and how to engage the wider community in HK are the topics for the last sessions. They also share some inspiration from actions already taken
